What it is
Measures the change in prices of a representative basket of goods and services bought by Filipino households. Published by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), it is the country's main gauge of inflation.
How it's calculated
Built from a regular price survey across regions, weighting each item by its share of household spending on an index with a base year of 100. It is released as an annual (YoY) and monthly (MoM) rate of change.
Market implications
Inflation is the key variable for the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), which runs an inflation-targeting regime. An above-expectations print tends to point to rate rises and supports the Philippine peso; food prices, rice in particular, carry a decisive weight.
Limitations
It captures only the selected basket and is highly sensitive to food and energy prices, which add considerable volatility. Core inflation, stripping out these components, better reflects underlying price pressures.
