Release
Published annually, covering the full year and subject to revision.
What it is
Gross Domestic Product (GDP) measures the value of all final goods and services produced in the Philippines and is the broadest gauge of the size and pace of its economy. It is published by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).
How it's calculated
It is compiled through the demand, output and income approaches, which must reconcile. It is released in real terms as an annual rate of change, with a strong weight of private consumption, underpinned by overseas workers' remittances and business-process outsourcing (BPO).
Market implications
It is the main reference for judging the Philippines' cycle and guides the policy of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas and the path of the peso. A strong print supports the peso and equities, while a weak one bolsters expectations of rate cuts.
Limitations
It is released with a lag and early estimates are later revised. Reliance on remittances and consumption exposes it to external shocks and to weather events such as typhoons.
