What it is
Gross Domestic Product measures the value of all goods and services produced in Romania over a given period. Compiled by the National Institute of Statistics (INS), it is the broadest gauge of the size and pace of growth of the Romanian economy.
How it's calculated
The INS first publishes a flash estimate and then provisional and revised data, in volume terms (constant prices) and seasonally adjusted, summing the value added of all sectors. It is released as a quarter-on-quarter and year-on-year change.
Market implications
It is the main benchmark for the Romanian cycle and, for the National Bank of Romania, a key variable alongside inflation in setting policy. Strong growth combined with large deficits fuels concerns over fiscal sustainability and weighs on the leu.
Limitations
The flash estimate is especially provisional and can be revised substantially in later releases. Quarterly data can be volatile, and heavy reliance on agriculture means harvests distort some quarters.
