About this indicator

FrequencyMensual
Release En torno a mediados del mes siguiente al periodo de referencia.
What it isThe Industrial Production Index measures the level of output of Romanian industry, covering manufacturing, mining and energy supply. Compiled by the National Institute of Statistics (INS), it is one of the most closely watched cyclical indicators for its ability to anticipate the economic cycle.
How it's calculatedExpressed as an index against a base year, it is built by aggregating the sub-indices of the various industrial branches, weighted by their share of value added. The data are usually calendar-adjusted and seasonally adjusted, with the month-on-month (MoM) and year-on-year (YoY) changes published.
Market implicationsIt is closely tied to the economic cycle and to Romanian GDP, and is closely related to business-climate indicators (such as the PMIs), which tend to lead it. It offers an early read on the strength of the country's manufacturing activity.
LimitationsIt is subject to revisions: publishing one month's figure usually revises the previous month's. It is a volatile indicator, sensitive to the number of working days and to one-off factors, so it is best read as a trend.
