What it isThe monetary policy rate set by the National Bank of Romania (NBR). It is the reference rate for the leu and the centrepiece of Romanian monetary policy.
How it's calculatedIt is not calculated statistically: it is decided by the NBR's Board at its scheduled meetings, guided by its price stability objective and the economic situation. Quoted as an annual percentage.
Market implicationsChanges pass through to ROBOR, credit and the leu (RON) exchange rate. A hike or hawkish bias tends to support the leu and curb inflation; a cut cheapens credit and supports domestic demand.
LimitationsIt only moves on decision dates (a step function) and works with long, variable lags. The NBR also intervenes in the FX market, so the policy rate alone does not capture its full stance.
