Release
Published annually, referring to a specific date in the year.
What it is
Measures the number of inhabitants of Romania and how it changes over time. It is published by the National Institute of Statistics (INS) and is a structural indicator that underpins many economic and social ratios, such as GDP per capita, density and per-head rates.
How it's calculated
Derived from population censuses and from statistics on births, deaths and net migration, which are used to update the figure between censuses. It is usually reported as a headcount at an annual reference date.
Market implications
Demographic trends shape potential growth, the labour market, consumption and spending on pensions and healthcare. In Romania, emigration to the rest of the EU and an ageing population are shrinking the working-age base.
Limitations
It is a low-frequency series: inter-census figures are estimates subject to revision once new censuses or better migration statistics arrive, and are hard to measure accurately given the large outward mobility.
