About this indicator

SourceNational Institute of Statistics Romania
FrequencyMensual
Release Aproximadamente un mes después del periodo de referencia.
What it isRetail sales measure the turnover of retail trade establishments in Romania, food included. Published by the National Institute of Statistics (INS), they are one of the most closely watched gauges of private household consumption.
How it's calculatedThey are compiled from a survey of retail businesses on their turnover, used to build an index against a base year. They are released in volume (deflated) terms, adjusted for calendar and seasonal effects, with monthly and annual changes.
Market implicationsThey provide an early read on private consumption, the largest component of GDP, so they help gauge growth and feed into the National Bank of Romania's (BNR) monetary policy and the leu (RON).
LimitationsIt is a volatile indicator, sensitive to seasonality, promotions and calendar effects. Preliminary figures are revised as more survey responses come in.
