Release
Published annually, covering the full year and subject to revision.
What it is
Gross Domestic Product (GDP) measures the value of all final goods and services produced in Saudi Arabia and is the broadest gauge of the size and pace of its economy. It is published by the General Authority for Statistics (GASTAT) and is heavily conditioned by oil.
How it's calculated
It is compiled through the demand, output and income approaches, which must reconcile. It is released in real terms as an annual rate of change, splitting oil GDP, non-oil GDP and government activities.
Market implications
It is the main reference for judging Saudi Arabia's cycle; the non-oil component is the key gauge of the Vision 2030 diversification plan, while the oil component reflects output and OPEC+ quotas. It sets fiscal revenues and the room for public spending.
Limitations
It is released with a lag and early estimates are later revised. OPEC+ output cuts can drag the headline GDP lower even as the non-oil sector grows strongly.
