What it is

Measures the share of Serbia's labour force that is without a job but available for and seeking work. It is published by the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia (SORS) as the main labour indicator.

How it's calculated

Derived from the Labour Force Survey as the unemployed over the labour force times 100, under ILO criteria and as an annual average, with methodology harmonised with the EU given its candidate status.

Market implications

Serbia has sharply cut a formerly very high jobless rate, so the figure is key to investment appeal and the EU accession process. A fall supports confidence and the dinar; the National Bank of Serbia focuses mainly on inflation and the exchange rate.

Limitations

Informality, underemployment and worker emigration persist, are poorly captured by the rate and shrink the labour force. It is subject to sampling error, seasonality and methodological revisions.
