What it is	The Industrial Production Index measures the level of output of Singapore's manufacturing industry, with a particularly large weight for the electronics and pharmaceutical sectors. Published by the Economic Development Board (EDB), it is a key gauge of the city-state's export-driven activity.
How it's calculated	Expressed as an index against a base year, it is built by aggregating the sub-indices of the various manufacturing branches, weighted by their share of value added. The month-on-month (MoM) and year-on-year (YoY) changes are published, both for the total and excluding the volatile biomedical sector.
Market implications	As a highly open economy and a manufacturing and trade hub for Asia, Singapore's industrial production is a leading barometer of global tech demand and regional trade. A strong reading points to higher growth and tends to support the Singapore dollar.
Limitations	It is highly volatile because of the outsized weight of the biomedical and electronics industries, whose batch production can cause sharp swings from one month to the next. The index excluding the biomedical sector is therefore also watched. It is subject to revisions.
