About this indicator

SourceStatistical Office of the Slovak Republic
FrequencyMensual
Release En torno a mediados del mes siguiente al periodo de referencia (suele haber un dato preliminar y otro definitivo).
What it isSlovakia's Consumer Price Index (CPI) measures the change in the price of a representative basket of goods and services bought by households. It is published by the Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic and is the country's main gauge of inflation.
How it's calculatedThe statistical office regularly collects prices across a wide sample of outlets and regions and weights them by each product's share of consumption spending, producing an index on a base year (index 100). It is reported as year-on-year and month-on-month changes (%).
Market implicationsAs a euro-area member, Slovak inflation contributes to the aggregate the European Central Bank (ECB) watches when setting rates. A high reading squeezes households' purchasing power and reinforces expectations of tighter monetary policy across the euro area.
LimitationsIt measures only the prices of items in the basket, not the whole economy. For the underlying trend, energy and unprocessed food are typically stripped out to give core CPI. A harmonised HICP is also available and is more comparable across the EU.
