What it is
Gross Domestic Product (GDP) measures the total value of all goods and services produced in Slovakia over a period and is the broadest gauge of the size and pace of growth of the Slovak economy. It is published by the Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic (ŠÚSR).
How it's calculated
Estimated via the demand, output and income approaches, which must reconcile. The ŠÚSR publishes a flash estimate followed by a detailed release, with a seasonally adjusted quarterly series and the quarter-on-quarter (QoQ) and year-on-year (YoY) changes in real terms.
Market implications
It is the benchmark for Slovakia's cycle and, as a euro area member, feeds the aggregate watched by the ECB. As an economy heavily reliant on the car industry and exports, a strong print signals robust external demand; a weak one reflects softness in Germany and industrial supply chains.
Limitations
It is released with a lag and the flash estimate is revised in later readings, so the first figure is not final. The heavy concentration in the car sector means output from a few plants can swing the quarter.
