What it isSlovakia's Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) is an inflation gauge compiled by the Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic using Eurostat's common methodology, allowing prices to be compared across EU countries and euro-area inflation to be calculated.
How it's calculatedIt is built from the prices of a basket of goods and services weighted by household spending and following Eurostat's harmonised classifications (COICOP) with a common base year. It is reported as year-on-year and month-on-month changes (%) and differs from the national CPI in items such as owner-occupied housing.
Market implicationsIt is the reference index the European Central Bank (ECB) uses for its price-stability target, so Slovak inflation contributes to euro-area monetary-policy decisions and allows inflation to be compared across member states.
LimitationsBeing harmonised, it does not capture every feature of national consumption, notably the exclusion of owner-occupied housing, so it can diverge from Slovakia's national CPI. For the underlying trend, the core HICP excluding energy and unprocessed food is followed.
