Release
Published annually (with quarterly advance estimates in some economies), subject to revision with the national accounts.
What it is
Measures the total gross debt owed by Slovenia's general government to its creditors. Compiled by the Statistical Office (SURS) and Eurostat under the Maastricht definition, it is reported in absolute terms and as a share of GDP.
How it's calculated
Compiled under the Excessive Deficit Procedure (EDP debt) by summing debt securities, loans and currency and deposits at nominal value, consolidated across subsectors. Eurostat publishes the debt-to-GDP ratio on a quarterly and annual basis.
Market implications
As a euro-area member, Slovenia's debt is assessed against the Stability and Growth Pact thresholds. After the peak tied to the 2013 banking bailout, the falling ratio has supported rating upgrades and market confidence.
Limitations
It is a low-frequency series subject to revision alongside the national accounts. The ratio depends on nominal GDP, so it can shift with inflation or growth even when underlying borrowing is unchanged.
