What it isThe Consumer Price Index (CPI) measures the average change in prices of a representative basket of goods and services bought by South African urban households. The headline year-on-year rate is the country's inflation benchmark and the target of the South African Reserve Bank (SARB), within a 3%-6% band.
How it's calculatedStats SA collects monthly prices for thousands of products across urban areas ('All urban areas' index), aggregates them under the COICOP classification using expenditure weights and computes an index with December 2024 = 100 base. Annual inflation is the index change versus the same month a year earlier.
Market implicationsIt is the inflation figure the South African market watches: it guides SARB rate decisions and affects the rand, bonds and expectations. A reading above 6% (top of the band) pressures rates higher.
LimitationsIt covers only urban areas (the headline index is 'All urban areas'); some components are not surveyed every month; and the basket and weights are periodically revised, introducing base breaks across historical series.
