About this indicator

SourceStatistics South Africa (Stats SA)
FrequencyMonthly
Release Unos dos meses despues del periodo de referencia, hacia el dia 17-22 (11:00 GMT / 13:00 SAST)
What it isRetail trade sales measure the value of South African retail turnover. The year-on-year change at constant (2019) prices is a key gauge of household consumption and the pulse of the economy, and one of the figures watched by the market.
How it's calculatedStats SA surveys a monthly sample of retail enterprises, deflates nominal sales by type of retailer using the relevant price indices (constant 2019 prices) and aggregates them. The year-on-year rate compares real sales in the month with the same month a year earlier.
Market implicationsIt reflects the strength of private consumption. A strong reading points to solid domestic demand (positive for growth and the rand); a weak reading suggests households under pressure. It is a medium-impact figure for the rand and SARB rates.
LimitationsIt is a PRELIMINARY figure: each release revises the prior month for late submissions. It is sample-based (subject to sampling error) and weights/base year are revised every four-five years, introducing base breaks.
