About this indicator

SourceBank of Korea (BOK) - ECOS
FrequencyMonthly
Release Ultima semana del mes de referencia (encuesta del propio BOK).
What it isThe Bank of Korea's manufacturing BSI is a diffusion index drawn from its Business Survey Index, gauging how South Korean industrial firms perceive current and expected business conditions.
How it's calculatedA diffusion index built from firms' survey replies. A reading of 100 is neutral: above it favourable responses dominate, below it unfavourable ones do. Released monthly.
Market implicationsIt previews the state of Korean industry, which is highly geared to the global cycle (semiconductors, cars). Rising readings point to firmer activity and support the won, while falls signal a slowdown and weigh on the currency and equities.
LimitationsIt is a qualitative sentiment survey rather than a hard measure of output, so it can diverge from actual production data. It responds sharply to sentiment and to one-off news.
