Release
On the central bank's monetary policy meeting dates.
What it is
It is the official interest rate set by the Riksbank (Sweden's central bank), its policy rate (styrränta) through which it conducts monetary policy. It is the benchmark price of money in the Swedish economy.
How it's calculated
It is not calculated statistically: it is decided by the Riksbank's Executive Board at its regular monetary policy meetings, in line with its 2% inflation target and the state of the economy.
Market implications
Changes in the policy rate feed through to market rates, credit, the exchange rate and, via these, to consumption, investment and prices. It is the Riksbank's main tool; a hike (or a hawkish tone) tends to strengthen the Swedish krona (SEK), while a cut tends to weaken it.
Limitations
It is a discretionary decision whose effects on the economy work with long and variable lags. The market reaction depends as much on the decision as on the forward guidance (the Riksbank's projected rate path) and the accompanying statement.
