About this indicator

SourceSwiss Federal Statistical Office
FrequencyMensual
Release En torno a mediados del mes siguiente al periodo de referencia (suele haber un dato preliminar y otro definitivo).
What it isThe Swiss Consumer Price Index (Landesindex der Konsumentenpreise, LIK) measures the change in the price of a representative basket of goods and services bought by households resident in Switzerland. Published monthly by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO), it is the country's main gauge of inflation.
How it's calculatedThe FSO collects prices each month across a wide sample of outlets and regions and weights them by each product's share of household consumption spending. The result is an index on a base year (index 100), reported as year-on-year and month-on-month changes (%).
Market implicationsIt is the central reference for Swiss National Bank (SNB) monetary policy and shapes its policy-rate decisions. Switzerland runs structurally low inflation, so a hotter-than-expected print tends to support the franc and firm up rate expectations.
LimitationsIt captures only the prices of items in the basket rather than the whole economy, and the strong franc tends to dampen imported inflation. For the underlying trend, the core measure that strips out energy and fresh food is watched instead.
