What it is
Gross Domestic Product measures the value of all goods and services produced in Switzerland over a given period. Compiled by the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO), it is the broadest gauge of the size and pace of growth of the Swiss economy.
How it's calculated
SECO estimates GDP in volume terms (constant prices) and seasonally adjusted, summing the value added of all sectors. It is published as a quarter-on-quarter and a year-on-year change.
Market implications
It is the main benchmark for assessing the Swiss cycle and a key input for the Swiss National Bank (SNB) in setting rates. Stronger-than-expected growth tends to support the franc, while weakness reinforces expectations of rate cuts.
Limitations
It is released several weeks after the reference quarter and the first estimate is later revised, so it is not final. Quarterly figures can be volatile and sensitive to one-off items such as gold trading and merchanting.
