What it is	Measures the change in prices across Switzerland's total supply of goods, combining the factory-gate selling prices of domestic output with the prices of imported goods (the Total Supply Price Index, PGA), before final resale to consumers. It covers energy, mining and manufacturing and excludes construction and services. It is published by the BFS.
How it's calculated	The BFS (Federal Statistical Office) surveys each month the selling prices of a representative basket of products, from both Swiss manufacturers and imported goods, and builds a combined index (PGA). The month-on-month and year-on-year changes are derived from that index.
Market implications	Producer and import prices are a leading gauge of inflationary pressure, since rising costs tend to feed through to consumer prices with a lag. In Switzerland they also closely reflect the impact of a strong franc on the price of imported goods, a factor the SNB keeps a close eye on.
Limitations	To assess the underlying trend it is best to strip out the most volatile item, energy. Given the heavy weight of imported goods, the index is highly sensitive to the franc's exchange rate, and the data may be revised in later releases.
