What it is
Measures the change in prices of a representative basket of goods and services bought by Thai households. Published by the Ministry of Commerce, it is Thailand's main gauge of inflation.
How it's calculated
Based on a monthly price survey across Thailand's provinces. Items are weighted by their share of household spending and aggregated into an index with a base year (index 100). Average annual inflation averages the year's year-on-year rates.
Market implications
It is the central reference for the Bank of Thailand's inflation-targeting policy. A reading below or above the target range shapes the policy rate and tends to move the baht.
Limitations
It only measures the selected basket, not the whole economy. Fresh food and energy prices carry a heavy weight; the underlying trend is tracked via core inflation, which excludes energy and fresh food.
