What it isThailand's policy rate is the 1-day bilateral repurchase rate set by the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the Bank of Thailand (BoT). It is the reference rate for Thai monetary policy.
How it's calculatedIt is decided by the BoT's MPC at its scheduled meetings (six a year), guided by its inflation target and the economic outlook. The decision is announced the same day, usually a Wednesday afternoon Bangkok time, and takes effect immediately. Quoted as an annual percentage.
Market implicationsA hike raises borrowing costs to curb inflation and tends to support the baht (THB); a cut cheapens credit to stimulate the economy. Markets watch the statement's tone and the BoT's forecasts as closely as the rate level.
LimitationsIt only moves on decision dates (a step function). The BoT also manages the exchange rate and macroprudential measures that interact with the policy rate, so it alone does not capture the full stance.
