What it is
Measures the change in prices of a representative basket of goods and services bought by Tunisian households. Published by the National Institute of Statistics (INS), it is the country's main measure of inflation.
How it's calculated
Compiled from a regular price survey across regions, weighting each item by its share of household spending on an index with a base year of 100. It is reported as an annual (YoY) and monthly (MoM) change.
Market implications
Inflation is the key variable for the Central Bank of Tunisia when setting interest rates. A high print weighs on the Tunisian dinar and on purchasing power; food and energy prices, partly subsidised, shape the reading.
Limitations
It covers only the selected basket, and subsidies on food and fuel cushion swings, so their removal can push the index up sharply. Core inflation, excluding energy and fresh food, gives a clearer read on the underlying trend.
