What it is
Gross Domestic Product (GDP) measures the value of all final goods and services produced in Türkiye and is the broadest gauge of the size and pace of its economy. It is published by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK / TurkStat).
How it's calculated
It is compiled through the demand, output and income approaches, which must reconcile. It is released in real terms as an annual rate of change, with deflation of nominal values in a high-inflation setting being a particularly sensitive step.
Market implications
It is the main reference for assessing Türkiye's cycle and guides the policy of the central bank (CBRT) and the path of the lira. In a high-inflation environment, markets watch the balance between growth and the fight to stabilise prices and the currency.
Limitations
It is released with a lag and early estimates are later revised. Deflating with very high inflation, together with methodological revisions, has fuelled controversy over the reliability of the real figure.
