What it is
Measures the share of Turkey's labour force that is without a job but available for and actively seeking work. Published by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) and the main gauge of the country's labour market.
How it's calculated
Compiled from TurkStat's household Labour Force Survey using the ILO definition. It is the ratio of the unemployed to the total labour force, expressed as a percentage.
Market implications
Reflects the Turkish economy's ability to create jobs against a backdrop of high inflation and tight monetary policy. A lower jobless rate points to resilient domestic demand and wage pressure, factors the Central Bank of the Republic of Türkiye watches when setting rates and which move the lira.
Limitations
It does not capture Turkey's large informal employment or underemployment, so it can understate the real slack in the labour market. It is sensitive to seasonality and to discouraged workers who stop searching, and is subject to sampling error and revisions.
