What it is
Annual Gross Domestic Product (GDP) measures the value of all final goods and services produced in the United Arab Emirates over a year. It is the broadest gauge of its economy, published by the Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Centre (FCSC).
How it's calculated
It is estimated from the expenditure, output and income sides following international standards, distinguishing oil GDP from non-oil GDP. It is released in real terms (at constant prices), with the usual reading being the year-on-year (YoY) change in total GDP.
Market implications
It sets the pulse of an oil-dependent but increasingly diversified economy; non-oil GDP growth is watched closely as a sign of successful diversification. With the dirham pegged to the dollar, monetary policy tracks the Fed, so the reading matters more for investor confidence than for domestic rates.
Limitations
It is released with a considerable lag and subject to revisions, and figures depend heavily on oil output and prices, which adds volatility. The oil/non-oil split is key to avoid confusing energy-price effects with underlying momentum.
