What it isThe trade balance records the value of goods traded between Ukrainian residents and the rest of the world over a period, measured as the difference between exports and imports. The data come from the State Statistics Service and the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU).
How it's calculatedIt is derived as the difference between the value of goods exports and imports recorded in the external trade statistics and in the NBU's balance of payments. A positive balance is a surplus and a negative one a deficit; it is expressed in millions of US dollars.
Market implicationsThe external balance is a component of GDP and signals the economy's capacity to generate foreign currency. In war-hit Ukraine, a wide deficit strains reserves and the hryvnia and increases reliance on external financing.
LimitationsThe figures are not final and are revised. The war distorts trade flows, hampers data collection and drives sharp swings that depend on logistics routes and on grain and metals exports.
