About this indicator

Office for National Statistics (ONS)
Frequency
Quarterly
What it is
It measures gross fixed capital formation by UK businesses: purchases of machinery, equipment, non-residential buildings, capitalised R&D and so on, in volume terms (constant prices) and seasonally adjusted. It is published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
How it's calculated
It is estimated within the Quarterly National Accounts as a component of the expenditure measure of GDP. The ONS publishes the level along with quarter-on-quarter and year-on-year changes, in volume terms.
Market implications
It is a gauge of business confidence and the investment cycle: weak investment points to lower future productivity and potential growth. It is watched closely alongside the quarterly GDP release and can shape expectations for the Bank of England.
Limitations
Historically it is one of the most heavily revised series from quarter to quarter, more so than headline GDP; initial readings can change materially in later revisions.
