Release
Monthly, around the last Tuesday of the reference month, embargoed until 00:01 London time (23:01 UTC in summer).
What it is
The British Retail Consortium's Shop Price Index (BRC, compiled with NielsenIQ) measures the year-on-year change in the prices of a basket of everyday retail goods in UK shops. It is a leading gauge of retail inflation, released ahead of the ONS's official CPI.
How it's calculated
It is a weighted price index of a basket of frequently purchased food and non-food items, sampled across several large urban areas from data supplied by BRC member retailers. It is released as a year-on-year percentage change, with a split between food and non-food.
Market implications
Being released before the ONS's CPI, it offers an early read on price pressures in retail and helps anticipate the goods component of inflation, which the Bank of England watches closely when setting rates.
Limitations
It covers shop prices only -excluding services and housing- and uses its own basket and methodology, different from those of the official CPI. It is therefore not a substitute for CPI but a partial preview confined to the retail channel.
