About this indicator

SourceBank of England
FrequencyMensual
Release Aproximadamente cuatro semanas después del cierre del mes de referencia.
What it isM4 is the United Kingdom's broad money aggregate: it measures cash, deposits and other liquid liabilities held by the non-financial private sector. It is published by the Bank of England and is the widest measure of money supply in the British economy.
How it's calculatedThe Bank of England compiles it by summing banks' liquid liabilities to the private sector across differing degrees of liquidity. Both the level and its monthly and year-on-year growth rates are published.
Market implicationsIts path signals credit and liquidity conditions and serves as a medium-term inflation reference within the Bank of England's monetary analysis. A marked acceleration can be read as an inflationary risk, and vice versa.
LimitationsThe link with inflation and activity is unstable in the short run and hinges on the velocity of money. The 'M4 excluding intermediate other financial corporations' variant is often preferred to filter out noise, and the data are revised in later releases.
