About this indicator

Source
Bank of England (BoE), Monetary Policy Summary
Frequency
8 times a year (each MPC meeting)
Release
The same day as the rate decision, together with the Monetary Policy Summary.
What it is
This is the breakdown of how the nine members of the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) voted at each meeting: how many backed holding Bank Rate, how many a cut and how many a hike.
How it's calculated
Each MPC member casts an individual vote on the level of Bank Rate. The outcome is published as an 'H to D majority' in the Monetary Policy Summary, with dissenters named individually in the meeting minutes.
Market implications
A split vote, with more dissenters, signals less consensus and a higher chance of a rate turn at coming meetings, and often moves sterling and gilts as much as the decision itself. A unanimous vote reinforces expectations of continuity.
Limitations
The vote is qualitative: it counts heads but does not gauge the strength of each stance, which must be read in the minutes and speeches. The committee's membership changes as members rotate, limiting the historical comparability of the split.
