Monthly (flash + final)
Release
Flash around the 23rd of the same month; final around the third working day of the following month (same PDF as the services release). 09:30 BST (08:30 UTC).
What it is
The S&P Global Composite PMI rolls the UK manufacturing and services PMIs into a single diffusion index (the Composite Output Index). A reading above 50 signals private-sector expansion; below 50, contraction. Each month brings a flash (preliminary) reading and a final one.
How it's calculated
A weighted average of the manufacturing output index and the services activity index, with weights reflecting each sector's share of GDP. The data are seasonally adjusted. The flash reading captures most panel responses and the final one incorporates them all.
Market implications
It is the best monthly lead indicator of UK GDP growth and the most closely watched of all the PMI releases. A stronger-than-expected print tends to support the pound and firm up Bank of England rate expectations, while a weak one does the reverse.
Limitations
A qualitative survey that can over- or under-react at turning points in the cycle. It excludes construction and the public sector, and reflects the direction of change rather than its magnitude.
