Monthly (flash + final)
Release
Flash around the 23rd of the same month; final on the first working day of the following month. 09:30 BST (08:30 UTC).
What it is
The S&P Global Manufacturing PMI (formerly IHS Markit) is a diffusion index built from a survey of purchasing managers in UK manufacturing. A reading above 50 signals expansion; below 50, contraction. Each month there is a flash (preliminary) reading and a final one that revises it.
How it's calculated
A weighted composite of five sub-indices: new orders (30%), output (25%), employment (20%), suppliers' delivery times (15%) and stocks of purchases (10%). The data are seasonally adjusted.
Market implications
The flash reading is one of the first signals of the month on the UK industrial cycle and moves markets more than the final print, which usually confirms it. A stronger-than-expected reading tends to support the pound and Bank of England rate expectations.
Limitations
A qualitative survey that reflects the direction of change, not its magnitude. The sample is concentrated in manufacturing, which is a small share of the services-oriented UK economy.
