Release
Flash around the 23rd of the same month; final around the third working day of the following month. 09:30 BST (08:30 UTC).
What it is
The S&P Global Services PMI (Business Activity Index) is a diffusion index built from a survey of purchasing managers in the UK services sector. A reading above 50 signals expanding activity; below 50, contraction. Each month there is a flash (preliminary) reading and a final one.
How it's calculated
A diffusion index of business activity in services, equivalent to the output index in manufacturing, based on a single question about the change versus the previous month. The data are seasonally adjusted.
Market implications
Services make up most of UK GDP; together with the manufacturing PMI they form the Composite PMI, a leading indicator of GDP. A stronger-than-expected reading tends to support the pound and Bank of England rate expectations.
Limitations
A qualitative survey that reflects the direction of change, not its magnitude, and can over-react at turning points in the cycle.
