Frequency
Monthly
Release
Around the 4th-6th of the month after the reference period, 08:30/09:30 London time (no flash estimate of its own)
What it is
The S&P Global UK Construction PMI measures monthly activity in the British construction sector through a survey of purchasing managers at construction firms. A reading above 50 means expansion, below 50 contraction. It covers three sub-sectors: commercial work, housing and civil engineering.
How it's calculated
A diffusion index (0-100) compiled by S&P Global from a monthly survey of a panel of construction purchasing managers. Unlike the Manufacturing, Services and Composite PMIs, it has NO flash estimate: there is a single, final monthly reading.
Market implications
A leading indicator of British construction activity, watched alongside the Manufacturing and Services PMIs to complete the picture of the economy's three big sectors (S&P Global's official Composite does not include construction).
Limitations
A private panel survey, not a census, and more volatile than the ONS's official construction output statistics; with no flash estimate, it comes out a full month after the reference period.
