Release
Published annually, covering the full year and subject to revision.
What it is
Annual Gross Domestic Product (GDP) measures the value of all final goods and services produced in Uruguay over a year. Published by the Central Bank of Uruguay (BCU), it is the broadest gauge of the size and pace of growth of the Uruguayan economy.
How it's calculated
It is estimated from the output side (sector value added plus taxes), the expenditure side and the income side, which should agree. Reported in Uruguayan pesos at current and constant prices, with the real annual growth rate measured against the previous year; agriculture and agribusiness carry a notable weight.
Market implications
It is the key reference for assessing Uruguay's cycle, exposed to agriculture, energy and regional demand from Argentina and Brazil. Solid growth supports employment and revenues; a weak reading weighs on the peso and reinforces caution at the Central Bank of Uruguay.
Limitations
It is released with a lag and early estimates are revised. Weather and harvests add seasonality and volatility, and one-off factors such as droughts or cross-border tourism can move the headline figure sharply.
