Release
Published annually, covering the full year and subject to revision.
What it is
Measures the share of Uruguay's labour force that is jobless but available for and actively seeking work. Published by the National Statistics Institute (INE), it is the main gauge of the Uruguayan labour market.
How it's calculated
Derived from the INE's Continuous Household Survey (ECH) using ILO criteria, as unemployed divided by the labour force, times one hundred. Released monthly and also as annual averages.
Market implications
It reflects the momentum of Uruguay's economy and its ability to create jobs, feeding into household income and spending. A high jobless rate points to weak demand and reinforces a more dovish stance at the Central Bank of Uruguay.
Limitations
It is subject to sampling error, seasonality and revisions, and does not capture job quality or informality, which is high in Uruguay. A falling rate can reflect lower participation rather than stronger hiring.
