What it isIt is an indicator of the degree of utilization of plant and machinery, which reflects the country's production potential. It covers the Industrial, Mining, Electricity and Energy. The total capacity can be defined as the maximum output that could be achieved with current resources. In turn, the Federal Reserve refers to the so-called maximum sustainable capacity.
How it's calculatedThe information is obtained from government agencies and surveys such as the Survey on plant capacity (Survey of Plant Capacity, SPC) of the Bureau of the Census. The rate of capacity utilization is calculated as the division between the industrial production index and capacity index, adjusted to a single decimal.
Market implicationsWhen analyzing inflationary pressures in the US, the CPU (utilization of production capacity) is one of the most important indicators, as the Federal Reserve itself established in 1995 a level (82%) from which inflationary pressures they could begin to be worrisome. The Federal Reserve is the interpretation of the data is correct, and can be comparable with the rate of other years, so you have to make consistent series of Industrial Production and Capacity Surveys.
LimitationsIt is subject to subsequent revisions, so that the publication of a fact, we review the previous month.
