What it is
The Chicago Fed National Activity Index (CFNAI) is a composite index summarizing US national economic activity and inflationary pressure, built from 85 monthly indicators across four categories: production and income, employment, personal consumption and housing, and sales, orders and inventories. Published by the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago since 1967.
How it's calculated
A zero value for the index indicates that the national economy is growing at its historical trend, negative values ??indicate below-average growth, and positive values ??indicate above-average growth.
Market implications
It is a good indicator of the economic situation both now and future. It also provides information about the evolution of inflation in the United States. Different studies have shown that this index often anticipates changes in the economic cycle of the country.
Limitations
Data can be modified to be reviewed so caution should be exercised when interpreting them.
