About this indicator

SourceU.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), Department of Energy
FrequencyWeekly
Release Miercoles siguiente a la semana de referencia (jueves si el lunes de esa semana es festivo federal), 10:30 GMT-4/5 (hora del Este). Semana de referencia termina en viernes. (14:30 GMT)
What it isMeasures the weekly change in US commercial crude oil inventories (excluding the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, SPR), published in the EIA's Weekly Petroleum Status Report. It reflects the balance between production, foreign trade and refining demand in the world's largest oil consumer.
How it's calculatedThe EIA gathers mandatory weekly data from US refineries, terminals and pipelines. The level of commercial inventories (excluding the SPR) is measured in thousands of barrels at the week's close; the weekly change is the simple difference between the current week's level and the previous one.
Market implicationsA larger-than-expected draw in inventories tends to be bullish for crude prices (WTI/Brent) and bearish for the dollar against oil-exporter currencies; an unexpected build has the opposite effect. It also moves energy stocks and pairs such as the CAD, NOK and MXN.
LimitationsA volatile figure week to week, affected by hurricanes, refinery maintenance and holidays that shift the release. It excludes the SPR, which is reported separately. The American Petroleum Institute (API) publishes a private estimate the day before that often moves the market and can diverge from the official EIA reading.
