About this indicator

SourceDallas Fed
FrequencyMonthly
Release Último lunes de cada mes.
What it isThe Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas runs a monthly survey of manufacturing activity in the state of Texas, addressed to around a hundred executives at industrial firms. It has been produced since 2004 and offers an early read on the sector's pulse.
How it's calculatedThe replies are turned into diffusion indices: each is calculated by subtracting the share of responses pointing to a decline in activity from the share pointing to an increase. A reading above zero indicates growth from the previous month and a negative one contraction. The indices are seasonally adjusted.
Market implicationsIt is a leading indicator of the industrial cycle, useful for anticipating the course of the national economy. Because manufacturing is very sensitive to the economic climate, its output tends to react faster and more sharply than the economy as a whole, making this regional survey an early clue to the cycle ahead of national data.
LimitationsThe data may change on revision, so they should be read with caution. Being a regional, small-sample survey, its coverage is limited to Texas and its monthly volatility is high, so it does not always reliably anticipate the national manufacturing figure.
