About this indicator

SourceBureau of Economic Analysis
FrequencyQuarterly
Release Hay dato preliminar, revisión y avanzado (uno, dos y tres meses). (13:30 GMT)
What it isMeasures the value of all final goods and services produced in the United States in a quarter. It is the broadest gauge of economic activity and of whether the economy is expanding or contracting.
How it's calculatedCompiled by the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) from expenditure data: consumption, investment, government spending and net exports. Reported as an annualized quarter-on-quarter rate and in three successive estimates (advance, second and third) as more data arrive.
Market implicationsSets the tempo of the US business cycle. Strong growth supports the dollar and equities and gives the Fed room to keep rates high; a slowdown fuels expectations of rate cuts.
LimitationsThe advance estimate rests on incomplete data and is often revised significantly later. Because it is annualized, a single quarter can overstate the underlying trend.
