Release
First Tuesday of the month (annual calendar published by TechnoMetrica), 10:00 ET (14:00/15:00 UTC)
What it is
The RCM/TIPP Economic Optimism Index (formerly IBD/TIPP) is the first monthly reading of US consumer confidence. It is compiled by TechnoMetrica from a survey of around 1,300 adults: a reading above 50 signals optimism and below 50, pessimism.
How it's calculated
It is the average of three sub-indices: the six-month economic outlook, personal financial prospects and confidence in federal economic policy.
Market implications
Released early in the month, it leads the University of Michigan and Conference Board confidence surveys for the same month, so the market uses it as an early read on the mood of the US consumer.
Limitations
It has a smaller sample than the Michigan or Conference Board surveys and greater sensitivity to respondents' partisan bias; its market impact is usually limited.
