About this indicator

SourceBureau of Labor Statistics
FrequencyMonthly
Release Aproximadamente mes y medio después del periodo de referencia. (14:00 GMT)
What it isMeasures the number of job openings that US employers are seeking to fill at the end of the month, from the Bureau of Labor Statistics' JOLTS survey. It is a gauge of labour demand and of tightness in the labour market.
How it's calculatedIt is drawn from a survey of a large sample of establishments on their open positions, alongside hires and separations (quits and layoffs), from which the BLS estimates the economy-wide total. It is reported as a number of openings.
Market implicationsA high level of openings relative to the number of unemployed points to a tight labour market, with hiring difficulties and upward pressure on wages, which concerns the Federal Reserve. The quits rate is also watched as a signal of worker confidence.
LimitationsIt is a survey-based figure subject to sampling error and revisions, and it is released with a longer lag than other labour indicators, so it offers a somewhat dated snapshot of the jobs market.
