About this indicator

SourceU.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis
FrequencyMonthly
Release Aproximadamente un mes después del periodo de referencia. (12:30 GMT)
What it isIt is the core version of the personal consumption expenditures price index, which excludes food and energy. It tracks the prices of goods and services bought by US households and is the Federal Reserve's preferred inflation gauge. It is published by the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA).
How it's calculatedIt is derived from the personal consumption expenditures deflator in the national accounts, stripping out food and energy. Unlike the CPI, its weights are updated continuously as household spending patterns shift. It is followed through its month-on-month and year-on-year changes.
Market implicationsIt is the inflation measure the Federal Reserve targets at 2%, making it highly relevant for interest rate decisions. A hotter-than-expected print tends to push yields and the dollar higher and delay rate cuts; a cooler one does the opposite.
LimitationsIt is released later than the CPI and is revised as the national accounts are updated. By excluding food and energy it misses the real cost households face when those prices spike, so it is best read alongside the headline index.
