Release
Flash around the 22nd-24th of the same month; final around the third working day of the following month. 09:45 ET (13:45 UTC).
What it is
The S&P Global Services PMI (Business Activity Index) is a diffusion index built from a survey of purchasing managers in the US services sector. A reading above 50 signals expanding activity; below 50, contraction. Each month there is a flash (preliminary) reading and a final one.
How it's calculated
A diffusion index of business activity in services, equivalent to the output index in manufacturing, based on a single question about the change versus the previous month. The data are seasonally adjusted.
Market implications
Services make up most of US GDP; together with the manufacturing PMI they form the Composite PMI, a leading indicator of GDP. A strong reading tends to support the dollar and yields, while a weak one weighs on growth expectations.
Limitations
A qualitative survey that measures the direction of change, not its magnitude. It should not be confused with the ISM Services index, which comes from a different provider and methodology and yields different readings.
