What it isPrice Index of Industrial Production measures the average change in selling prices received by domestic producers of Goods, Services and Construction. That is, it measures changes in prices over time from the point of view of the seller, not the consumer.
How it's calculateda final index is calculated from a study of the evolution of prices. This study is conducted to a survey, which selects the sample of companies which are registered in the Unemployment Insurance System. Subsequently, it is broken down to see what types of products and services will be included in the list. From January 2014 a new methodology that seeks to expand coverage is used. The new index measures changes in prices of goods, services and construction for final demand and intermediate demand (includes nearly a 50 percent expansion of coverage in the case of final demand).
Market implicationsThree aspects define its usefulness calculation according to the source: its economic significance, as it represents the price level before retail. Second, it serves as a deflator of other economic series. Thirdly, it is used as a reference for certain contracts, as the CPI.
LimitationsOnly one part of the price of the economy, so it must be complemented by other indicators such as the CPI.
