What it isThis tracks Vietnam's inflation from the Consumer Price Index (CPI) published by the General Statistics Office (GSO), capturing the change in the price of a representative basket of goods and services bought by households. The headline figure is the annual change in prices.
How it's calculatedThe GSO collects prices monthly across a wide sample of provinces and outlets, weighted by household spending on a base year (index 100). It is reported as year-on-year and month-on-month changes (%); food and transport carry a large weight in the Vietnamese basket.
Market implicationsIt is the central reference for State Bank of Vietnam (SBV) monetary policy, which manages an inflation objective. A high reading can foreshadow monetary tightening and pressure on the dong, while contained inflation gives room to support growth.
LimitationsThe large weight of food and energy makes the series sensitive to supply shocks and seasonal factors such as the Lunar New Year (Tet). It captures only basket prices, and official statistics can be affected by administered adjustments to regulated prices.
