What it isThe Industrial Production Index measures the volume of Israel's industrial output over a period, covering manufacturing, mining and energy supply. Published by the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), it is one of the most closely watched cyclical indicators of the business cycle.
How it's calculatedExpressed as an index against a base year (index 100), it aggregates the sub-indices of the various industrial branches weighted by their share of value added. Figures are typically calendar- and seasonally adjusted, and released as an annual (YoY) and monthly (MoM) change.
Market implicationsIt is closely tied to the business cycle and to Israel's GDP, and is usually foreshadowed by industrial sentiment surveys. Strong output points to firmer activity and supports the shekel; its trend is a relevant input for the Bank of Israel, and the economy's tech and export orientation heightens attention on industry.
LimitationsIt is subject to revisions: releasing one month's figure usually revises the previous one. It is a volatile indicator, sensitive to the number of working days and to one-off factors, including swings in the high-tech sector and geopolitical tensions.
